SFC John Smith is a veteran of the United States Army and is Bergen County’s Veteran of the Month for December!
John served two tours in Vietnam from 1967 to 1970 and performed River Patrols while he served in Vietnam, only coming home for a total of 8 months in the 3 years he served.
After Vietnam, he served as a police officer. In 1982, John reenlisted into the Army and served for 20 more years. He held multiple titles and positions during this period, serving as a Training NCO and Supply Sergeant for Battalion and Brigade units.
For his service, John has acquired multiple medals and awards; among them are the Expert Infantry Badge, the National Defense Medal (awarded 4 times) the Vietnam Service Medals with 5 Bronze Stars, and multiple Expert Rifle and Pistol badges.
John has lived in Bergenfield for 30 years and is currently on the Bergenfield Zoning Board and was the previous chairman of the Veterans Committee of Bergenfield. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, he ran a food pantry in Bergenfield from the VFW Post giving food to those that needed it. Today he still works to help other veterans with their paperwork to file benefits claims.
We thank him for his service to our nation!
