Staff Sergeant Dominick Spagnuolo, 1917-1973, served in World War II and is July’s Bergen County Veteran of the Month!

Dominick enlisted to the Army in January of 1941 and was deployed to the North African Theater in October of 1942, where he saw action in the invasion of occupied North Africa, later transitioning to the Tunisian and Sicilian campaigns.

In 1944, he was deployed to the European front and engaged in operations after D-Day. He served with the 9th Division, 47th Infantry Regiment during its drive into the city of Cherbourg, through Northern France, Belgium, and eventually Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star by Maj. Gen. Louis A. Craig, commanding general of Veteran 9th Infantry Division for meritorious service in operation against the enemy from July to September 30, 1944.

He returned home in 1945, and was awarded several medals and accolades both during and after his deployment.

He holds the Silver Star for Gallantry, the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster for wounds twice received in action, and the Distinguished Unit Badge, which is a Presidential citation that marked his battalion for extraordinary heroism.

He was also awarded the Order of King Leopold II Knight’s Medal, the third highest civil and military decoration in Belgium, and the Croix de Guerre, the Belgian WW2 commendation.

Since his honorable discharge, he remained a resident of Lyndhurst and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church.

He was a member of the Homing Club and was employed by the Republican Carloading Co. in Elizabeth for over 10 years.

Dominick passed away in January of 1973, at Veterans Administration Hospital in West Orange.

We thank him for his service to our nation!
